I completely agree with all the reasons you spell out as to why Substack is winning in fashion, Noria! The “tell a friend” concept makes it feel very personal and provides a keen sense of discovery in the chats when others are engaging in topics relevant to our curiosities. I’m not writing on Substack… solely reading, and I find it all very engaging and thought provoking ! Being a company owner in the fashion space, I have had many great learnings and trend insights come from Substack and I forward articles profusely to others when I see something they’d benefit from reading. Keep the posts coming - love reading what you have to say !
Thank you Jill! So glad to have your support and couldn't agree more that it is a hub for learnings and trend insights. Those chat rooms are wild, too.
I 100% agree. And I believe in remuneration for content creators. But the variety of subscription tiers, publishing frequency, and paywalls I hit when I’m not yet sure whether I am prepared to commit is Byzantine. It’s subscription overload in $8 increments and a messy user experience right now.
such a good point Deb. I can't keep track of what I'm subscribed to for free vs paid, and I'm still a little confused by the user experience but I thought it was just me, lol. I feel like there will have to be some sort of aggregation.. like a bundle of creators would come together to offer one super sub or something... more power in numbers. So basically they would create their own mini media company?
Yes exactly. There has to be a better way particularly when there’s so much overlap in types of content, particularly fashion and travel. It could be a more - dare I say - magazine-like experience if some creators banded together to rev share. Or readers could self-curate bundles and get charged a flat tiered rate by Substack. I like the way Becky does it and am guessing she does so well with affiliate revenue that it offsets any subscription shortfall. But the user experience is ripe for improvement and the more writers and readers join the platform the more this will come to a head.
